As I kid growing up at North Narrabeen, I remember watching the likes of Simon and Greg Anderson, the Bannister brothers, Andrew Kidman and a host of other great surfers demonstrating the function and style of backhand laybacks on good hollow days. I used to love watching them lean back and use the wave face as their guide through small barrels. Nowadays you don’t see the layback used as often as the grab rail technique, but that’s not to say they’re not fun as shit to try, and offer a whole new way of appreciating a wave and view from the inside of even the smallest of cover ups. Here’s an example of playing around a few weeks ago down in Chile.
